Allen Say wrote and illustrated a graphic novel biography entitled Drawing From Memory. Say recounts his time as a teen on his own in California. His family did not want him to become an illustrator and would not support him financially. Say worked to support himself and with the help of his teacher's encouragement, managed to become an apprentice to the most important comic artist in Japan.
