On October 7 - a group of art students from Morton East were able to visit the Art Preserve and the John Michael Arts Center in Sheboygan , Wisconsin. Due to a high school teacher fellowship grant, students were invited to explore the space and learn about the artist Mary Nohl. We were also privileged to meet the artist Dr. Charles Smith who spoke about his art profiling African history. In addition, students met Alex Gartelman - the artist in residence at Mary Nohl's home. He shared Mary's personal diaries with the students.
Students also created pewter casts during a hands on workshop. Under the guidance of art teacher Teresa Cantero and librarian Mary Kate Witry, students will create mobiles inspired by Mary Nohl's work. That work will be displayed at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Winter 2022. Mrs. Witry and Ms. Cantero would also like to thank the J Sterling Morton District 201 Board for their support as well as the Morton East High School administration.
We are also grateful to the John Michael Kohler Arts Center for the field trip, supplies and experiences provided by this grant.
